Time to Reflect
Invertebrates are the largest group of animals—they make up about 97 percent of all animals. Invertebrates are very successful because of the special adaptations they have for obtaining food, reproducing, and protection. Invertebrates are also important to humans: they help in the reproduction of many flowering plants (pollination by insects) and they are a food source (crabs, lobsters, shrimp, oysters, clams, and so on). Some invertebrates are agricultural pests (locusts), yet others are helpful in agriculture (earthworms and lady bugs).
