6.03 Transmission and Treatment


Time to Reflect

Most bacteria are helpful. Some, however, do cause diseases. Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics. Be smart! See your doctor when you are sick. They can make sure the problem is caused by a bacterium and not a virus. Antibiotics don't help fight viral infections.

  • Antibiotics kill bacteria by destroying the cell wall.
  • Advances in science help us fight bacterial infections more successfully than in the past.
  • We can practice basic behaviors, such as hand washing, to prevent the spread of diseases caused by germs, including bacteria.
