5.07 The Kingdoms of Life

Travel Log icon

Speaking of the exhibit areas of the ship, the crew has set up several displays of the various kingdoms of life. As you visit each display, write down characteristics of the kingdom, and we'll meet back later to compare notes.

Click on each word to explore each kingdom below. Add the characteristics for each kingdom to your Travel Log.

text ebacteria and archaebacteria text protista (protist)
text fungi
text plantae (plants) text animalia/animal

Guess Who?

Suppose you are looking at a sample of pond water, and you see a single-celled organism swimming in the water. It's green, and moves quickly. There's a clear picture of a nucleus, but you can't see any other organelles with your compound light microscope. In what kingdom does this organism belong?

Check with Windows to the Universe to see how you did.

Discussion Time

Consider the following questions and prepare to discuss your thoughts.

  • Which Kingdom do you think has the most interesting organisms?
  • Name one cool organism from that Kingdom.
  • Describe one characteristic that makes it interesting.

Please go to the 5.07 Kingdoms of Life discussion and post your response. You'll also need to respond to at least 2 other student responses.

Note: As you prepare to respond to your classmates, you may want to refer to the Guidelines for Discussion for help in formulating your words.

Move on to the Travel Log tab to complete this activity.
