5.06 Scientific Names

Good morning! I hope you found some great thing on your shopping excursion yesterday.

On today's itinerary we have a simple, yet exciting, fishing trip. While in port, we will catch a taxi over to the S.S. Guppy Charter Boat Company. On the way, we'll make a quick stop at the market to get some snacks and some sunscreen. Trips aboard the Guppy are always exciting.

In this activity, you will:
  • recall the uses of a naming system for living things
  • use the genus and species name for an organism to properly write a scientific name

As we ride to the market, take a look over at the beach. It is nesting season for sea turtles. Look, there's a group of students and their professor checking on a nest. Each season the female turtles are studied as they come in and build their nests, and then the nests are monitored until the eggs hatch.

When scientists go into an area to study the living community, they take many notes and pictures. In many cases they do not know the names of all the wildlife. Using their notes and photos, they can use classification systems to find out what the unknown organisms are, or they can make up a new name for the previously undiscovered organism.

Click on the faces below to see what some of our other guests called those sea animals on the beach.

As you can see, we need a better system of naming. If scientists only used common names, there would be a lot of confusion. Let's get our snacks, meet our skipper, and get started learning how to name organisms.

Move on to the BioVenture tab to continue this activity.
