5.05 Taxonomy: Getting Things Organized

Time to Reflect

Without a classification system for living things, scientists would be doing a lot of unnecessary work. By using the seven taxonomy levels, scientists are able to place living things into categories and study them more easily. Living things are classified based on physical and cellular characteristics. The more taxa two organisms have in common, the closer they are related and have similar traits. This helps scientists in their research of living things.

  • Taxonomy is the science of classifying living things (organisms).
  • Living things can be grouped based on their genetic makeup into 3 domains.
  • Organisms are classified according to their characteristics.
  • There are seven taxonomic levels. So, each kingdom is broken down into very specific organisms.
