5.03 Forces of Evolution

Time to Reflect

This has been and exciting first day on the H.M. S. Beagle! We have learned so much about the Galapagos Islands that I can hardly wait to get there. We should be arriving in the morning. Lets’ review to prepare for our excursion tomorrow.

We have discussed 4 forces that bring about evolution in species.

  • Mutations, genetic mistakes that create new alleles.
  • Gene flow, mating with closely associated species adds new genes to the gene pool.
  • Genetic Drift, drastic changes, or isolation can cause the gene pool to shift.
  • Natural selection, individuals with helpful adaptations have more offspring and these genes become more common in the population.

Prepare for the assessment by completing the review activity.
