5.01 Origin of Life

Great! Looks like we're all here. Again, I welcome you aboard! As we get underway, I want to remind you that tonight is our welcome aboard party. Be sure that you dress to impress, as there will be a lot of special people attending.

The party is being held next to the History Room on the mid-level promenade. On the way, stop and take a look at the History of Ships exhibit displayed there, but don't be late! Several of you will be seated at the Captain's Table—a special privilege.

  • discover the difference between a theory and a law
  • compare and contrast microevolution and macroevolution
  • discuss the Scientific Theory of the Origin of Life

Look at the models and pictures of the ships below. They have really evolved over the years, haven't they? The shapes, general designs, and especially power sources have changed. Cruise ships are different today too. They are bigger in size, and the crew doesn't have to shovel coal to produce steam for power. Today we have sophisticated engines and guidance systems that are operated by computers.

different types of boats. From left to right: a rowboat, a sailing barge, a two-mast sailing ship, a steam-powered ocean liner, and a modern cruise ship.

Ships today have become more complicated but when we look around we still see all different kinds of boats and ships. Some are very simple like a row boat others are huge and complicated like the cruise ship that we are on now.
