3.06 The Cell: Quest for Energy

Ok, break camp and get the bus packed!

Hey! Careful with that clay pot when you put it on the bus. It could be my next piece for the Museum of Natural History in London.

CRASH!

Wow! What's that inside? No way! An ancient scroll. Let's see if I can interpret it. The sun, energy, food, water, energy, the sun, hmmmmmm? I think this scroll is a quest for gaining knowledge on two very important cellular processes.

  1. Photosynthesis
  2. Cellular Respiration

Grab your Travel Log, this is a perfect opportunity to explore these cellular processes. Both process are actually chemical reactions. They start out with certain elements and compounds, the reaction takes place, and a new set of substances are produced! We have special names for the starting and ending substances in chemical reactions.

  • Reactants are the substances that the processes start with.
  • Products are substances that result from the process.

When you are finished with this activity make sure that you know the reactants and products for both photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

tips

Energy Packets = ATP

We know cellular respiration allows us to break down compounds and to use the energy stored in them.  The chemical reaction creates ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which can be used by our cells to do work. Let’s take a closer look!
