2.08 Conservation

This is one of those sad but happy moments. Here we are starting the last part of our Extreme Eco Challenge. I am so glad we got to know one another and share our deepest thoughts about some very near and dear things: ecology.

As we walk towards the beach let's reflect on our trek through the biosphere. I hope you won't take the things we've discovered along the way for granted. It is very important for us to remember how important the Earth and its resources are. Each of us needs to do our part!

 In this activity you will:
  • explain biodiversity and its importance.
  • relate various threats to the loss of biodiversity.
  • describe strategies used in conservation biology.

The Honors student will:

  • evaluate a conservation project of their choice and write a letter to their representative describing the need for government support of the project.

The cars and the gas we use, the paper in our travel logs, and the food we eat for energy are just a few of the natural resources that the Earth provides for us. Natural resources are materials found in the natural environment that are useful or essential to humans. Our homes, our transportation, and most of the items we use on a daily basis come from natural resources.

Don't forget that all of the resources we have are all we are going to get. While we may "discover" more oil, there just isn't going to be anymore made by nature. Today's discovery of oil just might be an empty hole in the ground ten years from now, and that hole isn't going to get refilled for several millions years. That is why it is important for us to be alert and conserve.

Everyone can make a difference! Let's go and see what we can do!
