1.03 Travel Tips and Resources

Final Preparations

Now that you know where your resources are, and we are pretty sure you will not get lost, we need to cover another important aspect of travel—the language barrier.

If you have ever traveled in a foreign country, where the language is not the one you speak, the journey can be quite a bit more challenging. Science, specifically Biology, has its own special language and vocabulary. Learning the vocabulary, on top of learning new ideas and content, can be overwhelming.

So we have developed a tool we hope will help you with learning the Biology language - the BioVentures Vocabulary sheet; the Vocab Sheet for short. You will find one in each module. All vocabulary words in the course are signified by bold-faced, brown print. When you see one, you should go to the Glossary (remember this is at the bottom right-hand of the page), find the definition and record it on the module Vocab Sheet.

Before continuing, take the time now to print the Module 1 Glossary page.

Final Resources: Plug-in Downloads

You will use each of the following plug-ins at some point during your adventures. Make sure you have each of these on your computer.

Software and the Brief Information about Each Software
Software Brief Information about Each Software
Adobe Shockwave
Shockwave will allow you to view and listen to various multimedia interactivities and audiovisuals from the web. If you do not have this plug-in loaded on your computer, use the link to go to the directions for adding this plug-in.

Adobe Reader
Adobe Reader will allow you to open text files that are easy to print. You should have downloaded this during your voyage throughout the Student Orientation. If you do not have this plug-in, use the link to go to the directions for adding this plug-in.

RealPlayer
The RealPlayer multimedia player will allow you to play streaming audio and video files. If you do not have this plug-in installed on your computer, use the link to go to the directions for adding this plug-in.

QuickTime
QuickTime will also allow you to hear and view various audio and video files. If you do not have this plug-in installed on your computer, use the link to go to the directions for adding this plug-in.

Java
Many multimedia interactivities are created using the programming language called Java. To get these to run properly you must have a few settings on your computer switched on correctly. To avoid most problems with Java pieces, take a minute to follow the directions on the linked page to set your computer up correctly. (Java Computer Settings)

Flash Player
Many multimedia interactivities are created using a program called Flash. To view them properly you must have the free Flash Player installed. (The Flash Player is different than Shockwave.) If you do not have this plug-in installed on your computer, use the link to go to the directions for adding this plug-in.

School Supplied Software:

  • Go to the Course Information area.
  • Check to see if your school has provided additional software resources.
  • If so, download and install them now.

Contact your instructor immediately if you have any questions concerning school supplied software or any of the plug-in downloads.

OK! That is it! Move on to the Travel Log tab to complete your first report to the BVRD folks.
