Because they're endothermic and because of the insulation provided by their feathers, for both cooling and heating, birds are able to live in almost any climate—from the frigid Antarctic to the scorching desert.

• Birds have an efficient four-chambered heart and special air sacs in their lungs that contribute to efficient saturation of the blood with oxygen.
• Unlike any other group of vertebrates, their bodies have special adaptations that allow them to fly, like hollow, air-filled bones.
