6.06 Protists: The Dark Side

Many protists are beneficial (algae, for example), and have a positive impact by being a food source or producing oxygen. Others, as you've seen, cause disease and can be quite harmful, like the giardia protozoan that, if ingested by drinking untreated stream water, gives you intestinal problems!

  • Most disease-causing protists come from the group of protozoans called sporozoa.
  • They are parasitic and need the host organism to live and reproduce.
  • They affect both humans and other animals species.
