6.05 Protists: A Wildly Diverse Kingdom

Ah ... this is one of my favorite places to visit around sunset. It is so peaceful and beautiful, and it seems so quiet. You can forget about all the life that is going on around you. Ponds are so full of living things that sometimes get overlooked. As one of your activities while you're here, you'll do a little investigating into the unseen life that exists here. For now, take a moment to relax.

Okay, that was long enough! Take the jar we asked you to bring; go to the edge of the pond and fill it up with water. Then head back up to the activity room to investigate.

In this activity, you will:
  • identify the characteristics of organisms in the protist kingdom
  • describe beneficial protests and their uses of protist

The Protist Kingdom

Pond water often contains many microscopic organisms that belong to the Protist Kingdom. Protists are also found in soil and other damp places. Like bacteria and viruses, protists can be harmful and beneficial.

Here are some beneficial uses of organisms from this kingdom. Click to reveal the information associated with the image.

Text-only version

So, are you seeing that this group of organisms is pretty important?

Head into the BioVenture tab to continue your investigation.
