7.01 Plants: A Diverse Kingdom

Come in, take a seat, and let's get started—the BioDome is a unique environment!

If this project is successful, we'll build biodomes like this one on the moon or the bottom of the sea. Then people could go there for vacation, or even live there on a permanent basis.

Would you like to vacation on the moon? With your help it might be possible some day.

In this activity, you will:
  • investigate plant classification
  • compare and contrast the characteristics of vascular and nonvascular plants

As you might guess, if we want to create an environment that is self-contained, there must be a way to produce the oxygen that we and other animals require for breathing and get rid of the carbon dioxide that we produce by doing so.

In both cases, plants are the key to the production of oxygen and the removal of carbon dioxide.

So plant life is a top priority in this project. Plants, as you know, produce oxygen and are the base of the food chain. Our goal then is to know plants well enough to determine the kinds of plants that are best for our project, what they need to survive, and then recreate those conditions inside the dome.

If you're up to the challenge of helping us figure this out, then grab your lab coat and let's get started.

Move on to the BioVenture tab to continue this activity.
