The Honors student will:

  • investigate the cell cycle

Onion Root Tip Lab

Niles, what a crowd you have brought to the Oasis market today. I'm all out of dates and cream cheese, but we have all kinds of other fresh fruits and vegetables for you and your friends. I recommend onions and apples since they travel very well in most any climate. Would you look at that! The onions have already started putting up tops trying to grow again. You know that the cells of these little things are always growing.

Today, you will visit the Onion Root Tip Lab website. Here you will practice identifying the stages of cell cycle, and determining what percentage of time the cell spends in each stage. When you arrive follow these directions:

  • Read the first page of information.
  • Push the next button and read the second page of information.
  • Push the next button (3rd page). On this page you will be instructed to make a chart on a piece of paper. You can copy and paste the chart into a word processing document.
  • Push the next button (4th page).
Complete this activity to identify the stages of the cell cycle.
After you are done classifying all the cells, you will be asked to record your information in the chart and determine the percentage of time the cell spent in each stage.

This will be good practice for your quiz.
