3.05 The Cell: Cellular Transportation


Time to Reflect

The cell membrane functions to maintain homeostasis for the cell. It is composed mainly of fats and proteins that act as a chemical barrier between the inside and outside of the cell. Small molecules like water and oxygen can move in and out of the cell easily. The cell must use energy to move larger molecules like proteins and wastes.


  • The cell membrane is in charge of controlling all the substances that come into and out of a cell.
  • Cell membranes use active and passive transport to move materials into and out of the cell.
  • Osmosis, the movement of water, is a type of passive transport because it does not require any energy. It is a spontaneous process.
