3.02 The Cell: Living Machines

Time to Reflect

The chemistry of life takes place inside the cell, making the cell the unit of structure and function. That is, the cell is the building block of life (structure) and it is the place where the chemical reactions of life take place (function).

Living things must have carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to carry out these cellular activities. You and I get these from the food we eat. Our bodies break the food down into tiny parts and then rebuild the parts into molecules we need to grow.

  • Carbohydrates are sugars and starches that contain energy which can be released fast.
  • Lipids are important parts of cell structures and store a lot of energy for "emergency" use.
  • Proteins are found in every part of the cell and in a time of need can be used to provide energy.
