1.06 When in Rome: Can You Read the Signs

When we measure something we are interested in determining the amount of what we are measuring: the number of meters between towns, the number of grams in a substance, the number of liters of gas we buy, or the number of hours a plane flight will take. While traveling in Science, you will see quantities expressed in metric units. So it is important you understand how to read and use the metric system accurately.

In making measurements we will use the Metric System. You have been introduced to the basic units, what we measure using those units, and the kinds of instruments we use to measure the quantity. Check your understanding, and practice what you have learned in the two interactivities below. Do not move on until you can score 100% on each.

Great job! Looks like you've mastered that information!

Are you ready for another challenge? Travel a few more kilometers down the metric road and learn to write metric measurements. You'll also complete some simple conversions between metric units.

Length, Mass, Volume, and Temperature

Keep moving and stay on track, there is just a little farther to go! Finish these next activities and you will be an expert in all this measurement stuff.

Directions:

Access the tutorials below. Each one will take you through explanations and examples for a different kind of measurement. Spend time studying these concepts. You will put them into practice at the end of each section and in the activity assessment. (Click on the link to access the tutorial. This will open in a new browser window.)
