1.05 Honors - When in Rome: Science as a Process

The Honors student will:

Identify the steps of the scientific and experimental methods in the work of others

Now that you are familiar with the process, let's see if you can identify the process in the work of others.

  1. Copy and paste the questions below into a word processing document.
  2. Save the file in your Biology Folder as an .rtf file (Help Saving Files)
  3. Type your answers using a blue colored font so they can be seen easily by your instructor.
  4. To find the information you need, open and print the Reading link below. On this page you will find an article that describes a biology experiment that took place on the International Space Station in 2002.
  5. Complete the information from the reading.

When you have completed the activity above, you will take your information and transfer it to assessment 1.05 When in Rome: Science as a Process. So, make sure you do this part of the activity first!

Reading: Sowing Seeds in a Magnetic Field by Patrick L. Barry & Dr. Tony Phillips

  1. What is the question or problem that the research teams are trying to solve? (2 points)
  2. What are some of the things they already know about the way plants grow that will help them answer the question? (2 points)
  3. The scientists on this team are suggesting two possible answers to the question. What are they? (2 points)
  4. Further down in the article they actually state the hypothesis in the "If this is true... Then this will happen" format. Find those statements and copy and paste them here: (2 points)
  5. Describe the basic procedure that they will put the plants on the Space Station through. (3 points)
  6. What are the scientists doing to make sure that only the effects of gravity are being tested? (2 points)
  7. When the research is finished on board the Space Station, will all of their questions about this matter of gravity's effect on plant growth be answered? Why? Why not? (2 points)

Did you get the information you needed? If you have questions about how the process of science and experimentation are represented in this article, now would be a good time to contact your instructor for some help!

Make sure you have completed the questions about the Reading and have them available. You will use the answers from these questions to complete the report for this activity.

1.05 Honors - When in Rome: Science as a Process
15 points

Note: You should have completed the regular portion of the activity and should have already submitted the assessment for that part of the activity. If you have not done so, please do that now.

To complete the Honors activity:

Go to the assessment area and choose the 1.05 Honors - When in Rome: Science as a Process. Submit your responses to the 7 questions.
