1.02 Travel Tips for Navigation

In this activity you will:
  • develop an understanding of course navigation
  • set up your course notebook

As you know, your tour activities are divided into eight BioTours, or modules. You will begin each BioTour by visiting the travel office for a tour preview. Then you will work through the Itinerary, BioVenture, and Travel Log tabs of the individual tour activities (lessons). You should complete the activities in order as you see them on the preview sheet. Upon completion of each tour activity you will report your findings to the agency in a variety of ways.

We continue your tour preparations by familiarizing you with some very important navigation information. On any journey it is important to understand the "road signs" so that you do not get lost.

Navigating the Course

Here is what to expect:

First, you will access your lessons through the Biology home page.

When you arrive at an activity page you will see a series of tabs at the top of the page, similar to this:

The larger tab indicates the page you are currently viewing. Each smaller tab is a link to the other parts of the activity page. Some activity pages do not have every tab. Which tabs appear with each activity will depend on the requirements of that particular activity page. It is very important that you view each tab in an activity page or lesson.

NOTE: Honors activity pages will have a 4th tab, as seen below. When you see this tab and you have chosen the Honors Track, you will need to complete the assignment on that tab.

Here is what to expect on each tab:

You will find an Itinerary tab in every activity page that will provide you with some introductory information about the activity. This page will also include information about how to prepare for the learning adventure in the upcoming lesson. This is the beginning of each activity page.

Whenever you see the BioVenture tab, you will know that information will be presented on a new topic for you to explore and experience.

Every time you see the Travel Log tab, you will know that your adventure is ending and that there may be something to submit for a grade or just something to think about. On this tab you will find out what you are to submit, how to submit it, and how your work will be graded.

The Honors tab is a signal to Honors Credit students that they have an Honors assignment to complete.

You can also navigate from page to page within each lesson by using the "previous" and "next" buttons found in the bottom right-hand corner of each page. Occasionally, for ease of navigation, only a "previous" button is provided.

  • The "Home" button returns you to the Biology home page that lists each module and each lesson.
  • The "Glossary" button takes you to the Glossary for this course.

You may also see the following icons in the course:

Icons and What They Mean
Icon Image What does It Mean to You
When you see the TIPS icon, click it to view the words of wisdom behind it.
Travel Log icon When you see this notebook icon you will know there is something you should be adding to your Travel Log (course notebook).
Did you know? icon When you see the "Did You Know?" icon, click it to reveal an interesting tidbit of information.
World Wide Web icon The globe icon indicates you are leaving the course to venture out onto the World Wide Web and are no longer inside the course.

There are a few more conventional icons you will see, but they are pretty self explanatory. However, if you do have any questions as you proceed through the course you should contact your instructor for assistance.

To proceed, use one of the means of navigation you learned about in this lesson to get to the next tabbed page—the BioVenture.
