8.09 Mammals: What's Inside—The Pig


Oh, good, you made it. While she's making preparations for your departure, Matilda sent me over to supervise you with your final Safari Quest—the pig dissection. I'm Ellie, and I help with some of the tour activities, especially the ones in the lab hut. Matilda and the other workers are not too fond of the lab work, but I love it! No matter how many times I look at the internal structures of an animal, I am always amazed at the beauty and complexity that I observe. I also enjoy passing my enthusiasm and interest on to others, like you.


In this activity you will:
  • explore the external and internal structures of a fetal pig
  • describe the basic function of the internal structures of a mammal

Virtual Pig Dissection

Let me park my bike, and we'll head indoors. I can't believe how humid it is already, but I guess that's the Wet Forest for you.

For this activity, you'll be investigating the anatomy (structures) and physiology (functions) of a typical pig. This activity is a virtual dissection.

Follow the steps below as you work through the Virtual Pig Dissection.

  1. Open a Notes Page.
  2. Copy and paste the following format into your Notes Page and then access the pig dissection.

    Pig Dissection

    To locate and list the general function of the following organs you'll have to go through each of the study guides in the activity at the resource website.

    1. Small intestines
    2. Large intestines
    3. Gall bladder
    4. Liver
    5. Spleen
    6. Pancreas
    7. Kidneys
    8. Bladder
    9. Heart
    10. Diaphragm
    11. Lungs
Honors Students Only.
  1. List the order of the canal organs in the digestive system from mouth to anus.
  2. List the accessory organs to the digestive system.
  3. What is the function of the pyloric sphincter?
  4. Describe the organs that air goes through.
  1. Everyone - Regular and Honor Students
    1. Open the fetal pig dissection and go through ALL 4 sections:
      External features
      Thoracic (Respiratory and Circulatory)
      Abdominal Cavity (Digestive, Reproductive and excretory)
      Nervous system
    2. Go through the Quizzes section. Use these quizzes to test your knowledge.
    3. This will help you prepare for your Fetal Pig Dissection Worksheet in assessment 8.09.
