8.03 Introduction to Fish

“Introduction to Fish” Discovery Education Video Transcript

Today, we're going to start our vertebrate tour with the fish--the first, and largest, vertebrate group. Hello again. We're having an electrifying experience this morning. These biologists from the Vermont fish and wildlife department are passing a current through the water that temporarily stuns the fish so they can easily catch them and carefully study their population makeup. The fish these scientists are studying are just one of the over 20,000 different kinds that have been identified so far. Along with a great variety, fish also have a long history on the planet. This is a fossil of a fish that lived over thirty-five million years ago. Still other fish swam through the world's oceans as far as 500 million years ago.
