Zygote
The union of the sperm and egg form a zygote. This will attach to the female’s uterus and begin to grow and divide. The first thirty days are an extremely important time of rapid cell division and growth.
Month 1
By the end of the first month the new life has reached about ¼ inch in size. It will continue to grow rapidly for the next thirty days where it will double in size. At this point the new life will be called an embryo.
Month 3
This month the baby’s heartbeat should be heard with a special machine called an ultrasound. The next month the baby will form eyelids and lips. The embryo is now called a fetus. This next month the gums and teeth will form and the fetus will grow to be about 5 inches long.
Month 5
Mom should start to feel the fetus move very soon! This next month the fetus develops hair and the sweat glands will form. The fetus is very active.
Month 7
The fetus can now open its eyes. At this point the pupils will respond to changes in light! The brain is maturing. This next month the brain and nervous system will continue to mature. Mom may even feel the fetus hiccups!
Month 9
Get ready! This baby is going to be ready for birth very soon. The baby continues to gain weight and grow. The lungs are still maturing. This next month the baby will start to turn and get ready for birth.
Birth
Wow! The baby is here. It is likely to be around 7 ½ pounds and be around 20 inches long!
