Microevolution

Hey, check out that flying fish. Did you know that flying fish have large fins which allow them to take short glides above the surface of the water? Their glides are generally around 40 meters long. Impressive! That unique adaptation allows flying fishes to escape predators.

Microevolution

Evolution that involves changes in a species over time to produce adaptations that allow the organism to better survive its environment is microevolution. One example of microevolution is seen in predator and prey relationships. Access the Discovery Education video clip to learn more about microevolution.

(01:29)

In microevolution changes in a species result from genetic changes. These changes can result in new traits for the species, or the changes may result in a new subspecies, but not in a new species.
