Wings and Sternum

Wings are probably the most recognizable adaptation that enables birds to fly.

The shape of the wings creates the physical conditions needed for lift. The wings are attached to a large, flat bone, called a sternum. The wings are attached to the sternum by tendons and powerful flight muscles. The sternum provides the support, and the breast and wing muscles provide the power needed for the birds to fly. Birds make flight look so easy, but it takes a tremendous amount of power and energy. If you watch birds, they eat quite a lot to supply their energy needs.
