Build a Teen Procedure

You need to determine who will be flipping for which genes.
One of you will need to flip for the father's genes and one of you will need to flip for the mother's genes. Make this decision before proceeding through the rest of this activity. Record the data in the data chart. Since the mother can contribute only X genes, the sex is determined by the father. So, only the person flipping for the father's genes needs to flip the coin.

Heads=X (female) Tails= Y (male)
Record the sex of the teenager on the data chart.

You will determine the following traits by flipping the coins. Each parent will contribute a gene.

Heads= A Dominant Trait/Gene (Capital Letter)
Tails= A Recessive Trait/Gene (lowercase letter)

I will walk you through the first trait.

For the face shape the instructions said to flip for the mother. If you get heads then your teen gets R (round) gene from the mom (if you flipped and got tails your gene got "r" gene from the mom). Then toss the coin a 2nd time to determine what gene the father gave your teen.

So for my teen:
The first coin toss which was for the gene the mom passed onto my teen I got heads=R

The second toss of the coin to determine what gene got passed from the dad I got tails=r

When you put the gene from mom and dad together you get "Rr" (Put the dominant gene first.) This is the genotype of the offspring for face shape.

Recall genotype is genetic makeup of the organism. The information page above can tell you what phenotype the Rr will be.
Phenotype is the outward expression of the gene. What you see. A teen with the Rr genotype will have a round face shape.

The chart displays the correlation between trait and face shape: Mother - R, Father - r, Genotype – Rr, Phenotype – Round. *You can see this trait depicted in the Information page that you printed earlier.

Continue to flip your coins with your partner for the rest of the traits.

Chin Shape I: Heads= V Tails= v

Cleft Chin: Heads = A Tails = a

Skin Color involves 4 gene pairs. So, you will each need to flip the coin four times. One for each of the following letters:

Heads= A Tails= a

Heads= B Tails= b

Heads= C Tails= c

Heads= D Tails= d

Hair Type: Heads= C Tails= c

Widow's Peak : Heads= W Tails= w

Eyebrows I: Heads= B Tails= b

Eyebrows II: Heads= N Tails= n

Eyebrow Color: Heads= H Tails= h

Eye Color involves 3 gene pairs. So, you will each need to flip the coin three times. One for each of the following letters:

Heads= A Tails= a

Heads= B Tails= b

Heads= C Tails= c

Mouth Size: Heads= M Tails= m

Lip Thickness: Heads= L Tails= l
Protruding Lower Lip: Heads= H Tails= h

Dimples: Heads= D Tails= d

Eye Size: Heads= E Tails= e

Eye Shape: Heads= A Tails= a

Eye Slantedness: Heads= H Tails= h

Eyelashes: Heads= L Tails= l

Nose Size: Heads= N Tails= n

Nose Shape: Heads= R Tails= r

Nostril Shape: Heads= R Tails= r

Earlobe Attachment: Heads= F Tails= f

Freckles on Cheeks: Heads= F Tails= f

Now, combine the traits you flipped for in the genotype and
