Reproduction

Binary fission is a type of asexual reproduction. The single chromosome makes a copy and then separates. The bacteria will use cellular energy to separate the cell. This results in two bacteria that are identical. It is a type of clone.

Conjugation is another type of bacterial reproduction. Bacteria can form bridges with a structure on their cell wall called pili. The two bacteria can exchange all or part of their chromosomes. This can result in a variety of new bacterium cells.

Special Note: Some scientist consider this a type of sexual reproduction because there is an exchange of genetic material (DNA) between two bacteria. However, others do not consider it sexual reproduction because there is not a fusion of gametes (sex cells). Depending on the source, resource or expert you may get a difference of opinion.
