Bacterial Characteristics

Recall that all bacteria have a prokaryote type cell—it has no membrane-bound organelles, not even a nucleus. It is one cell with only a few parts to run all of the life processes.

Most bacteria have:

To maintain life inside one cell, bacteria have to be very organized. Each chemical reaction and life process must be timed perfectly and occur within the one cell that makes up the organism. It is amazing to think of how precise a bacterium must be to survive. Think about it. If the cell dies, the organism dies. Yet bacteria are very successful organisms.
