Water can move all the way up a tall tree because the molecules are slightly charged. In each water molecule, H2O, the hydrogen atoms have a slight positive charge and the oxygen atoms have a slightly negative charge. Each water molecule attracts to the next. The charges also attract to the vascular tissue and are able to "climb" up the tree.
Try this! To see this special property of water, get a penny, a cup of water, and a dropper. How many drops of water can you fit on the head side of a penny? Try it out. You might be surprised. In the bubble of water that forms you will see the surface tension of water. The water molecules hold on to each other. Pretty cool!
