Alliteration for All!

Remember, Beowulf was originally a poem. It often uses poetic elements to enchance the story and draw your attention to phrases.

Today we will focus on alliteration and consonanceAlliterationis the repetition of vowel sounds throughout a sentence (it can also be continued throughout a paragraph, a page, etc...).Consonance is the repetition of consonant sounds through a sentence.

Here are some examples.

She sells seashells at the seashore.

PetePipepicked a peck of picklepeppers.

washed the water over my wavy hair.

The dodid a dance on the deck during the downpour.

In order to get some practice with consonance and alliteration, we are going to create our own sentences that use both.

With a partner, on a sheet of paper, write five sentences that use alliteration and/or consonance.

When you are finished, pick your favorite sentence and try to turn it into a short story or poem that uses alliteration and consonance.

We will share our work with the class.
